Forced Music Sharing Hiatus

As anyone who frequents any music sharing blog already knows, downloading music from the internet is pretty much dead for the time being. 4 days ago, everything was fine, today Megaupload, Fileserve, Filesonic, FileJungle, Uploaded, Filepost, 4shared, and several others are gone, at least for those of us in the US.

Right now Rapidshare looks to be one of the only sites left that Americans can upload to and download from. But they lost a lot of people when they switched over to that "Rapids" system or whatever they called it. I'm not sure, actually, I was one of the people who lost Rapidshare when they changed. I'll probably end up back with Rapidshare, but for the next few weeks I'm just going to lay low and hope this whole thing blows over and some of the shut down sites make a comeback, or some new guys show up*. Oh, and I'm also going to hope ACTA doesn't happen.

*I know it's a bit dumb for me to say "lay low for the next few weeks" considering my last post was over a month ago, but I thought I should at least briefly talk about this whole thing.

I kinda regret not getting a Halloween compilation together this year so I wanted to make sure I get a Christmas one done. As you can see I decided to go against my usual dark and gruesome compilation art choices and chose a pervy old Playboy painting instead. I also toned down the ridiculousness of the title (and in turn made it by far the longest title ever) to try and make it match the old compilation records they used to make so many of. Bert Kaempfert had a thousand of these things. I see at least a dozen of his every time I go to the thrift store.

As with all my compilations, I don't have a planned out order in which these songs should be listened to, I just listed them alphabetically because that's how they were in the folder. I don't have enough time to do my usual incessant rambling today, so you get to avoid reading all of that today. Anyway, here's your tracklist, hope you guys enjoy it!

Lor Crane - Haunted

This is the soundtrack from the 1977 film Haunted, not to be confused with the 1995 Kate Beckinsale film or a similarly titled film also from 1977 called Haunts, which is what I first thought it was when Code Red released the DVD this year. I actually haven't seen this one yet - though I would've checked it out the DVD immediately had it been Haunts that was released - a Cameron Mitchell film from the guy who did Graduation Day? Sold!

Anyway, moving on to the film this music actually comes from. Like I mentioned, I've never seen this one, but the tagline "It Began the Day They Installed That Telephone Booth in the Cemetery!" amuses me greatly so I might have to check it soon. Plus, the first song has vocals by Billy Vera and as a fan of King of Queens and it's hilariously cheesy theme song about weary eyes and tight backs that automatically makes this movie at least a little awesome.

Redneck Zombies - Filmed in Entrail-Vision!

Continuing with my current rigorous 1 post every 2 1/2 months schedule, here's the soundtrack from the 1989 Rednexploitation classic (is that a thing?) Redneck Zombies. This comes from the "Tromasterpiece Collection" DVD, which for those you you not averse to stepping into a Wal-Mart can actually find this 2-disc DVD in the $5 bin. It's like $18 on Amazon right now. I had just about finished searching through the hellish nightmare that is the DVD dump bin, when directly in front of me, literally on the bottom of the bin was a copy waiting for me to take it home. Finally, a dump bin victory. I check that thing every time I'm there, I don't think I've ever bought something from there. Although I was tempted by a Different World box set once.

Of course when I go to check out, the suspiciously attractive girl who works at my Wal-Mart rings me up. Normally, that's cool, because she's hot, and who doesn't like having to talk to someone who is hot? But this time I had a kind of creepy combination of items in my cart. Lotion (not for that), a hand mirror (it's amazingly hard to see the back of your head when you cut your own hair) and a DVD copy of Redneck Zombies, complete with extremely gross back cover. That's it. Should've also bought some groceries or a plant or something.

I've actually only seen half of Redneck Zombies, way back in 199...9, I think. I started it, had to go to work halfway through. I did not return to the movie. I recall I kind of hated it, but I'm going to give it another shot in the next few days. Maybe 12 years will change my opinion. Plus I had to buy it because I think it's funny seeing a Troma movie at Wal-Mart. I remember not that long ago Wal-Mart was a store that used to not carry music with explicit lyrics. Now you can go in and buy movies filled with extreme gore and ultraviolence like Hobo With A Shotgun and Redneck Zombies.

Curtains, which I actually watched for the first time today, is a pretty great slasher featuring John Vernon and Lynne Griffin. As a massive fan of both Strange Brew and Black Christmas I got a tremendous kick out of seeing Lynne here. Despite Curtains having some great stalking/death sequences and very solid acting and some nice twists along the way it's one of the few remaining quality early 80s slashers that's missing even a decent DVD release. It has been put out on DVD but apparently with a VHS transfer along with 3 shit recent movies nobody has ever heard of on a DVD set called The Midnight Horror Collection: Bloody Slashers. I've heard people have found that DVD at Wal-Mart in the dreaded $5 bin, but not me. I can't look through that thing for more than 2 minutes before I've knocked 4 copies of Howard the Duck on the floor or having some dude wander over and start throwing titles I've already looked at back to my side of the bin. It's a nightmare, and hardly worth the effort. Now if Synapse could go ahead and put this bastard out on a nicely loaded Blu-ray like The Dorm That Dripped Blood, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hobo With A Shotgun Invading Your Home Today!

Some of you might have noticed the last post took place back in February. No, I didn't die, get a time consuming girlfriend, or spend any time in the clink. I just kind of stopped posting after the Smash Cut soundtrack, and I just haven't thought about posting since then.

The main reasons being blog-writers block - which I've suffered from for a while now, but more importantly a lack of stuff to post. It seems every time I find something cool to post it's some limited edition soundtrack that was just released in 2011 and I don't want the feds or pissed off record label guys kicking in my door.

Another thing, with Rapidshare making paying for their service weird and needlessly complicated I haven't used the site in a long time, so a shitload of my RS links are gone, so I've got a lot of reup requests to deal with.

So this site isn't done, but I'm totally stumped as to what else I can post. So I'm open to any kind of requests or suggestions.

While I'm here, I thought I'd remind everyone that Jason Eisener's Hobo With A Shotgun was released for purchasing and owning today. Checking around a lot of people love this thing, but a lot of people seem to really hate it. I'm not seeing any middle ground for this one. No one seems to think it was just alright. Me, I loved it. I've seen it 3 times now and it keeps getting funnier every time I see it. Rutger Hauer just kills it in this movie and I'm pretty sure I'm in love with Molly Dunsworth.

Not only is the movie totally bananas, the blu-ray and DVD are filled with highly watchable features. I don't spend much time with extra features usually, but I've had my blu-ray going for about 4 hours now and there's still a ton of stuff to get through. The making of documentary is a beauty. Watching the director of a movie holding a camera, hanging off the back of a moving pickup while another guy holds him by the back of his shirt is one of the best things I've ever seen. Not just in a documentary, I mean ever.

The tremendously loaded Blu-ray and 2-disc DVD are actually on sale this week at Best Buy for $17.99, and if you take a moment to print this coupon, out you can have it for $13. It's certainly not a movie everyone is going to love, but at this price immediately after its release I highly recommend a purchase. I have no affiliation with Hobo or with Best Buy, just wanting to save some potential Hobo purchasers some money.

Side note: Hobo With A Shotgun has made me realize my next car has to be a Bricklin. Sure the car is considered to be one of the worst ever made, but how fucking cool are these things:

Graham Collins - Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace

Way back when I first started this site I shared the soundtrack from Canuxploitation flick Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter - which is still available to download, by the way. Today, I bring you Graham Collins equally excellent music from Lee Demarbre's 2004 film Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace. As far as I know this hasn't been released and I don't think it's been shared anywhere before.

I obtained this soundtrack the same way as the guys who got the Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter soundtrack, I contacted Odessa Filmworks about the availability of a soundtrack, and a few days later JC Vampire Hunter/Harry Knuckles director Lee Demarbre was awesome enough to send me the soundtrack. He told me to enjoy it, and share it, so here we go.

I don't have time to type out the tracklist right now, but there's 32 tracks and the file is about 170MB.

Smells like fish, tastes like PAIN!

Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace is actually currently on Netflix streaming if you haven't seen it. It's a must see for any fans of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, or anyone who likes weird ass martial arts comedies featuring Amazonian assassins and a bionic bigfoot.

The Sadist With Red Teeth - Opening Credit Song

I've just got one song for this post, sorry for anyone who got excited and thought I had the entire soundtrack (which I don't think was ever released). This is the song that plays over the opening credits of Jean Louis Van Belle's weird ass fake-vampire freakout film Le sadique aux dents rouges (The Sadist With Red Teeth). The opening credits do show the composer of the music played in the film (Raymond Legrand), but not who performs this song, or what the song is called.

This is the kind of thing I usually post on one of my compilations featuring unreleased movie music - see Mummy Came In My Room or Vampire Tickle Fight (aka Amateur Vampire Chiropractory). However it takes me a while to put together one those compilations since I usually rip a song here and there and let them pile up for several months before I post them. So from now on whenever I rip a song from a DVD I'll just put it up and maybe compile them together with custom cover and ridiculous "album" title when I've gotten about 15-20. Or not, I don't know yet, for now, here's the unknown track by the unknown artist from The Sadist With Red Teeth. Bonus points for anyone who can identify the track or artist.

One thing I wanted to point out. I wanted to mention that Mummy Came In My Room should've been titled Mummy Came In My House. Embarrassingly, I misquoted the movie and I just realized right now. I planted my face in my palm and cried out "Oh!" upon realization. Oh well, if Vader's "No, I am your father." line can be misquoted as "Luke, I am your father" thousands, and thousands of times I think my Monster Squad slip up is okay.

The Taint - Movie Review

THE PLOT

After the experimental drug Cockzantium (a penis-enlargening serum - invented so women will be unable to resist giving blowjobs to huge penises of the Cokzantium users) is leaked into the local water supply any men exposed to the water become misogynists. Not the traditional kind of women hating asshole misogynists, these dudes are maniacal monsters who are sexually aroused by the act of smashing women's heads in, usually with large rocks.

It's up to the one remaining untainted male, hipster/slacker/schoolboy Phil O' Ginny (director Bolduc) and badass female sidekick Misandra (Colleen Walsh) to fight off the misogynists and hopefully find a cure, or at least an explanation for the taint before these crazy bastards have smashed the heads of every female in sight.

THE REVIEW

The Taint is kind of like The Crazies, if everyone infected ran around with constantly ejaculating erections while bashing women's heads in. Yes, I said ejaculating erections. The infected misogynists all run around with huge Dirk Diggler-ian prostetic wangs hanging out of their pants, shooting jizz all over everything while destroying the heads of every female in sight with everything from hedge trimmers to car doors.

Featuring more head crushing than Riki-Oh and more dick shooting than Robocop, this is the kind of movie Troma should be making. Gross, shocking, offensive, hilarious, but also featuring some fairly excellent production values. For a film that couldn't have had much of a budget it actually looks very impressive and professional and features a few outstandingly well done gore scenes.

This is a tough film to really fully recommend. Not because I didn't like it, - I laughed, I cried, I nearly vomited. I think I loved it. But, I think the ejaculating boner stuff, and the truly disgusting nature of the film is probably going to turn off all but the most hardened trash fiends. But adventurous film fans who want to be truly offended while still laughing their asses off at something genuinely bizarre be sure to check this thing out at once.

Godzilla vs. Heavy Metal

This is post #900 on The Manchester Morgue and I thought it needed to be something really special and obscure. Then I thought, nah, a ridiculous mini album with heavy metal renditions of a few classic Godzilla tunes would be more my style.

A few months back Manchester Morgue joined forces with several fellow blogs to honor Linda Blair with Blair Week - a week-long retrospective of her acting career. This week we're back to honor another legendary actor. His name is Yaphet Kotto.

Yaphet Kotto is someone many probably don't know by name, but most people have surely seen the man in one of the absolute shit-ton of films he's been in. Topps Presents Dinosaurs Attack!

Don't think I've ever posted a trading card series before. So here's Topps' Dinosaurs Attack! series. I remember when these cards came out, I'd get so excited every time my mom was making a run to the High's down the street because I knew I could tag along and get her to buy a pack of Dinosaurs Attack.

These came out in 1988, so I was like 7-8 when I was into them. At the time I lived for dinosaurs and gruesome (well, Freddy gruesome, not Sodomatik gruesome) scary movies so combining the two was the greatest thing I'd ever heard of at the time. Of course, if I had heard of the movie Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds back then I very well might've shit.

Careful With That Axe, You Meanie - A Manchester Morgue Halloween Compilation

I've been too busy to post for a while, but I have spent a bit of time whipping up a new Halloween compilation guaranteed to absolutely frighten the Christ out of you. Or not. Really apart from Fantomas and their rendition of the theme from The Devil Rides Out, there's nothing particularly frightening going on here. I'm really going for a spooky fun-times kind of mood with this one. I didn't want to put anything too obvious, so no Monster Mash will be found here. In fact this is really more of a Halloween/General Horror kind of compilation. Lots of songs about Halloween, but songs about dancing Draculas and Jewish Werewolves as well.

When looking for horror themed music you mostly find two varieties of music, horror punk and any kind of "abilly" music - rockabilly, psychobilly, gothabilly, surfabilly. I actually had more surf/rockabilly stuff on here at first but that stuff REALLY starts to sound the same if you listen to more than 5 songs in a row. I mean there's still plenty of horror punk and a wide variety of abilly tunes here, but I've tried to mix it up a bit more than it was initially.

Any 45 Grave fans will want to download this album as I've included their track Night of the Demons from the remake that just got released on DVD. I ripped it from my copy so the sound isn't as good as I'd like, but I don't think it's been released anywhere yet.

I wear my silence like a mask and murmur like a ghost

I feel I need to explain a couple of these, so:

The Bee Gees - Haunted House. Listening to the lyrics I'm thinking this is more of a metaphorical haunting. However the song was listed as "Halloween Mix" and it's actually damn spooky sounding at times I kept it. And surprisingly as a non Bee Gee fan, this song kind of rules. Check it out.

Tracy Morgan as Tracy Jordan - Werewolf Barmitzvah. 30 Rock is one of the fastest paced comedies I've ever seen and surely one of the funniest shows currently on television. This song was featured on the show last year around Halloween and I would've included it, but I don't I've made an actual Halloween comp before, so here it is now.

Theme from The Young Ones Nasty Episode - This is the theme that plays at the beginning of the Young Ones Halloween episode titled Nasty. Kind of an old spooky haunted house movie feel complete with thunder and rain. I followed this with The Damned song Nasty which was performed in the show. Excellent song, one of my favorite Damned songs actually. So much so that I swiped my title from this song.

I was planning on making the cover more Halloweenie with leaves and pumpkins and shit, but while reading Fangoria back issues I stumbled upon this image from a film nobody saw (except for me) called Night Life and I knew a scene of extreme gore was the way to go.

One of my recent compilations got taken down pretty soon after going up and since I've got a few higher profile outfits on here (one of them sold a good 2 or so hundred million albums over the years) so grab this one before it gets kiboshed.

Jet Black Berries Unleash Postmodern Ghosts

Rochester New York's own Jet Black Berries have just released their first new album in 22 years. It goes by the name of Postmodern Ghosts and the album is comprised of new material as well as re-recordings of several classic New Math tracks like Invocation and They Walk Among You. Original members Chris Yockel, Gary Trainer, Mark Schwartz and drummer extraordinaire Roy Stein have all returned, the only missing member would be vocalist Kevin Patrick. Unfortunate that he's not back with them, but their tremendously talented new vocalist Johnny Cummings is a truly excellent replacement.

I've had a chance to check the album out and I recommend any Jet Black Berries/New Math fans seek it out at once. Post Modern Ghosts is an excellent comeback album that should be well received by old fans and one that should gain them many new fans as well.

Found these great model kit ads while looking at some old Fangoria scans. As a kid reading Fangoria (back when an issue cost less than a pizza) I used to beg my mom for pretty much anything I saw in any of the ads. Models, Shirts, that Leatherface mask that was always in the same ad with a Predator mask. I never actually successfully coerced her into buying me any of the stuff but she did once score a life-size Leatherface cutout from Texas Chainsaw Massacre II from a theater or video store. At the time, it was about the coolest goddamn thing I'd ever seen. Sadly over the years Bubba ended up getting lost and I've never seen another of the same cutout since. I've seen them for the remake Leatherface, but not the one from Part II. Probably for the best, hard enough to be involved in a serious relationship without a cardboard cutout of a 6 foot tall mentally retarded bumpkin wearing a Gein-ian skin mask in the corner of the living room.

This is German disco group Hot Blood with their 1976 album Disco Dracula.

This album combines my love of bloodsuckers and shitty novelty disco. Of the seven tracks most are standard upbeat disco, but a couple of tracks like Sex Me and Even Vampires Fall In Love amp up the sex factor while slowing down the tempo and come off sounding like they should've been featured in Dracula Blows His Cool or some other racy vampirical smut from the late 70's.

As you've probably noticed I'm trying out a new layout/banner on the site. Not sure if I'll keep it this way or not. My laptop has a wide screen where my computer I've had since I started this site did not. So when viewing the site with my laptop there's about 2 inches on either side of wasted space. This new layout looks better on a widescreen display but when I checked it on my old computer it's pretty huge. Either way, I'll stick with Belial for the time being.

Mary Shelley Overdrive - New Track From Forthcoming Album - Hear It Here First!

After a bit of a break Morgue favorite Mary Shelley Overdrive are just about ready to unleash their lastest album entitled Penny Dreadful Valentine. And they're doing it one track at a time.

"Welcome to the dedicated website for Mary Shelley Overdrive's second LP, Penny Dreadful Valentine. While most of the work is done, we've got a little bit of recording left to do on the album.

That being said, the idea of a "long play" album is dead ... but its corpse is still stinking up the joint. So we've decided to release PDV on a track-by-track basis. The entire album will be between 8 and 12 songs long, with the final song posted by Halloween."

They've released the first track Belladonna at the Official Penny Dreadful Valentine site. Night of the Demons - New Trailer at BD

I might've posted something Night of the Demons remake trailer related before, but a brand new trailer is up at Bloody Disgusting.

I personally love Night of the Demons 1 and 2 - just watched them this past week actually. And I always enjoy movies where a bunch of party goers are trapped and demons/zombies/radioactive blind people show up and effectively poop the party, so I'm actually quite excited about checking this one out. From the trailer it looks loud, ridiculous, and what's the word I'm looking for....Awesome? Yeah, that's it.

Here's Classic Themes of the Small Screen - Volume 2. Another compilation I've thrown together featuring classic and not so classic TV themes throughout the last several decades.

Of the tracks here The Monster Squad, Drak Pack, It's Always Sunny, The Mighty Boosh and The Tick themes were ripped by me, everything else I pulled from my massive 1200 theme file folder so credit to all responsible for the other rips.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Those of you not watching this show should definitely check it out. Unless you've seen it and you didn't like, in that case don't worry about it. I didn't get into the show until earlier this year, but I've since bought all the seasons and I think it's one of the funniest goddamn shows out there. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

The IT Crowd - My current favorite British show - featuring an Irishman. Check this out if you like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace or if you like The IT Crowd check out Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

That 80's Show - Failed That 70's Show spinoff or continuation, or knock off featuring Sunny's own Dennis Reynolds. Honestly, I kinda liked this show and think the one half season they had is more enjoyable than the pretty dreadful final seasons of That 70's Show. The theme song is actually just "Eighties" by Killing Joke. Sure they only play about 20 seconds of the song on the opening credits of the show, but since I've got Night Time on my hard drive here's the whole song anyway.

The Monster Squad and Drak Pack were essentially the same show, only one was a cartoon. The only difference really (apart from the cartoon thing) is that Monster Squad had monsters that were brought back to life and wanted to rectify all their past evils. Drak Pack featured Scooby Doobian teenagers who were able to morph into a Dracula, a Werewolf and a Frankenstein. For some reason the Drak Pack DVD is only available in Canada, so I had to import that from Canada to get this track.

The Vanduras - In The Dark

This is The Vanduras 2002 album In The Dark. So far this is their only album, which is really a shame because I've never quite heard anything like them before. I mean, they're pretty much just surf music but with a bit of an ambient western feel. It's very laid back and has an oddly haunting quality to it. Kind of hard to explain, but I highly recommend it, check it out.

Cutie Honey Song Collection Special

Today marks the 4th year (!) anniversary of The Manchester Morgue. I started this site August 12th, 2006 out of boredom during a slow night on an overnight stint at a copy shop, I really didn't think I'd still be doing this 4 years later - without getting shut down once even. So thanks to all of you who have stopped by over the past 4 years, especially in the earliest days where I was getting like 30 views a day and wasn't sure what the hell I was doing. I'm still not sure what the hell I'm doing but at least I kind of have a grasp on it now.

For post #868 (rougly) I've chosen the Cutie Honey Song Collection. I'm not really familiar with the manga series, the two animated TV series, or the two OVA series, but I do love the crap out of the live action movie. It's tremendously goofy fun, and I might just have to go watch it now after thinking about it.

You also get points for referrals, which is why I'm risking sounding like some kind of scummy salesman mentioning this here. Jet Black Berries - Postmodern Ghosts Sept. 7th

Holy shit, apparently I fell into some kind of 25 day coma here. Quite sorry about that, my blog post writer's block has come back with a fierce vengeance lately. I've got stuff I want to post but it's a real hassle when you can't think of what to write on a post. My delete key is really getting a workout these days.

Anyway, you may remember last year I posted about Jet Black Berries reforming and releasing an EP. Well, today I received an email from Roy Stein - drummer extraordinaire of JBB. He wanted to let me know that their new full-length album Postmodern Ghosts (great title, by the way) will be released Sept. 7th (William Katt's birthday!) and you can check out a few of their new tracks out.

Classic Themes of the Small Screen - Volume 1

This is the first volume (of potentially many) I've put together dedicated to classic, not-so-classic and occasionally completely unheard of themes from TV shows. I ripped one or two of these tracks myself, but most of them were in a huge pack I stumbled upon on Rapidshare, so thanks to all rippers who were involved.

Even though some of these are not particularly classic (Fish, I'm mainly talking about you here) or old enough to be considered "classic", I chose the title Classic Themes of the Small Screen for several reasons, a) it almost rhymes, 2) it sounds like something someone might title a compilation album, and finally and foremost I couldn't think of anything better. I must've spent a good 9, 10 minutes trying to think of a better title. No avail. One problem, I think, there aren't a lot of good terms for TV that I could work with, we've got Small Screen, Idiot Box, Boob Tube, Goggle Box (that one doesn't even make sense) and that's about it. And let's face it, those aren't good. We need to come up with a new term.

Anyway, at first I was going to break them up into decades, a 60's collection, a 70's collection, 80's collection and so on. This proved to be much more difficult than you'd think. A LOT of shows started in one decade and ended in another. Something like Married w/ Children started in the Eighties, but most of the seasons of the show were in the Nineties. So I've always thought of it as a Nineties show despite knowing the decade it started in. It became too much of a hassle trying to decide which volume to put which show in so instead of wasting too much time worrying about it I decided a more random assortment would be best.

For me the highlight is the HBO Feature Presentation theme that played before every movie in the 80's. This thing sounds EPIC. Now they just have the intro with the noisy static that turns into the HBO logo. Which is kind of out of date, I haven't seen static on a TV in years, they should change it to an Invalid Input screen or something at least. Or just bring back this EPIC Feature Presentation theme.

Maybe the next volume will be a bit more organized, but I thought I'd test this out first and see how much interest there was. I ended up with about 1,200 themes from the forum I found them on so if there's one you'd like to see on Volume 2 let me know, there's a good chance I have it.

Jim Davis' The Thing

Sure it's sloppy and hastily draw, but then I'm not really much of an artist. Morgue Inspection - George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead

I'm trying to branch out a bit and do some movie reviews here. I usually end up getting between 30 and 70 movies a month and I think I should try and review one occasionally. My goal, one DVD cover quotes.

I've always wanted to do reviews, and in fact I've done a few very long winded and sloppily written reviews on here before. My goal is to make my new reviews shorter and more to the point, I'd like to try and keep them concise, like 3 or 4 paragraphs long, but I'm not a strong enough writer to really convey what I'm trying to say without going overboard and writing a thousand word essay with little focus or coherence.

I'm a bit soft on movies. So much effort goes into even the worst, most godawful piece of shit movie you can think of (Terror Toons, you still hold that honor for me) that I really try and find positives in anything I watch. So I plan on trying a "like" and "hated" list at the end of the review, see how that works out.

Since I mostly post soundtracks, I will post "Review" or something in the title so nobody gets excited (negatively or positively) about downloading a soundtrack that just came out.

I was one of the very few people who didn't hate Diary of the Dead. It wasn't great, but I didn't get the intense, boiling hatred everyone seemed to have for it. So, that and a very positive review of Survival on CHUD had me excited as I popped this bastard on to see what Georgie had come up with for his sixth undead adventure. As sad as I am to have to say this about one of horrors greatest filmmakers, it turns out CHUD has one of the only positive reviews out there for a reason.

The movie opens on Plum Island, an island off the coast of Delaware, (where everyone has a thick Irish accent for some reason) during a worldwide zombie outbreak. There seems to be only two families on this island, the O'Flynns and the Muldoons. Patrick O'Flynn believes that every zombie should be killed immediately, even if they happen to be small children. His nemesis on the island Seamus Muldoon has apparently seen the movie Fido and feels zombies should be chained up and forced to do mundane housework, like cooking or cleaning gutters. Muldoon has had enough of O'Flynn's zombie killing ways and intends to kill him one night. But Pat's daughter makes a deal with Seamus - In lieu of shooting O'Flynn in the head, waiting a few minutes for him to zombify, then shooting him in the head again Seamus just forces O'Flynn (and a few others) off the island.

We cut to the United States a few weeks later where we meet a roving band of military cliches (hard ass leader Sarge, dopey idiot goofball, tough chick Tomboy, horny hispanic guy Cisco) who, along with a teenager they pick up on the way seek refuge at Plum Island, which they believe to be a safe, zombie-free haven. In order to get to this island they steal a ferry from...you guessed it, O'Flynn who has been tricking people into coming to his dock with false information about Plum Island so he and his partners can steal all their shit.

A big gun fight breaks out between O'Flynn and Co. and Sarge's crew . Zombies show up, a lot of shit blows up but thanks to Tomboy's kindness, O'Flynn ends up on the ferry on the way to Plum Island.

That's the basic set up, to say more would ruin the rest of the movie.

Things I liked:

The practical gore effects were mostly pretty good.

Zombie Horseback

The brief underwater zombie shots were very well done.

Kenneth Welsh answered the question "What if Sean Connery and Malcolm McDowell had a son?"

Fire Extiguisher zombie kill was really pretty awesome.

Alan Van Sprang looked kinda like Ron Livingston after a particularly harrowing bender.

Things I kind of hated:

Terrible Irish accents - and I think some of these guys were actually Irish

Some fairly poor acting from pretty much everyone

Repetitive human deaths, way too much neck "flesh peel" effect.

Shoddy CGI work. I'm still not sure why lower budget films even try CGI.

I wanted to like it, and for a good 40 minute stretch during the middle it was actually pretty engaging. But ultimately, the subpar acting, ridiculous accents (why were they Irish again?), slow start and mediocre ending kind of killed it for me. Romero fans, and zombie aficionados should give it a look, but be prepared to bitch about George losing it shortly after.

If you're wondering where I'd rank it with the rest of the Dead, I'd say:

Day of the Dead

Dawn of the Dead (a better movie than Day, but Day's zombie make-up is top notch, so it edges out Dawn for me a bit)

Night of the Living Dead

Diary of the Dead

Land of the Dead (this and Diary are both kinda so-so, I'm calling a tie between these two)

Turkaor Soundtrack Series Vol. 2

So, the brilliant and mysterious Turkaor stopped by again with a link to a whole new volume of rare and long lost film music. We have some choice cuts from Garbage Pail Kids (the movie, not the cards), Howard The Duck, Teen Witch and even something called Ninja Kids Phantom Force which sounds totally awful and completely awesome all at once - just the way I like 'em.

To honor Bruce Campbell's 52nd Birthday (which was yesterday, ooops) Sci-Fi Wire has whipped up some batches of Bruce Campbell's Soup. Okay, so they've actually just whipped up some fake labels for you to print out and put on soup cans at your house. Or as a gag - and waste of ink and photo paper - swing by your local grocer and confuse some housewife who didn't realize the Campbell soup guy's first name was Bruce.

Of course, the Bruce Campbell's soup idea has been around since whenever they made that crazy ass Captain Supermarket poster, but they a pretty spectacular job so it's okay. Plus how can you not like the idea of soups called Gumbo Ho Tep and Bisque o' County Jr?

Honestly, as a total dork, a big BC fan (Bruce Campbell, not the comic strip), a practicing graphic designer, and a guy who saw the poster years ago I'm disappointed in myself for doing these already myself. What was I thinking?!

At my job, about once a week we receive a shipment of merchandise that comes wrapped in old, wrinkled up Chinese/Japanese/Indian newspapers. I am obsessed with unwrinkling these newspapers written in a language I can't read and thoroughly looking through them. Why? Because sometimes you find something like this:

Wow, this one is even more ridiculous, wacky and gory than the Robo-Geisha trailer. Well played, The Big Tits Zombie in 3-D. Well played.

The plot:
Rena Jodo (Sola Aoi) is a stripper who just got back from Mexico and she has been offered a gig at a hot spring resort. When she arrives, she finds a deserted country town. There's hardly anyone in the audience at the strip club and all the other strippers, including Ginko (Risa Kasumi), Maria (Mari Sakurai), Nene (Tamayo) and Dana (Io Aikawa) are all bored stiff. They don't know what to do with their time and they are on the verge of fighting each other.

When they decide to go down to the basement of the club to kill time, Maria finds a "Book of the Dead" near "the Well of the Spirit." But who could have imagined the horror and panic that find would bring? Maria's reading of the book out loud has somehow revived the dead and zombies start appearing all over the world attacking
mankind. It's Hell in the real world!

Dana and Nene are bitten by the zombies and they turn into living dead who attack Rena and Ginko. The poor big‐bosomed babes have no choice but to fight against Maria who now rules the zombies and tries to establish a kingdom of zombies. Rena and Ginko have to challenge Maria and the hordes of zombies! And how does the Blue Demon Devil (Minoru Torihada) fit in?

This is another I found online for a price so cheap I couldn't not buy it. $0.38 if you're wondering. This 2000 film, directed by Rob Schmidt (of Wrong Turn fame) falls under category of "movies I've seen but don't remember a single second of". Not a bad movie, but for me, very forgettable. I know Monica Keena was in it, that "Yeah, but they make porno movies that start off like that, too" guy from Detroit Rock City (aka James DeBello) was her boyfriend, and either Kurtwood or Ironside was her Dad. That is literally all I remember.

The soundtrack is a bit interesting, if only because it features a Frank Black track, followed by a cover of a Pixies song. That's gotta worth something, right?

Levres de Sang (Lips of Blood) - 1975. Directed by Jean Rollin

Blood Orgy of the She-Devils - 1972. Directed by Ted V. Mikels. Also known as Female Plasma Suckers. I didn't think you could top Blood Orgy of the She-Devils for a movie title, but I think Female Plasma Suckers might have done it.

Blood Beach - 1981. Directed by Jeffrey Bloom. This is a fairly awesome Italian poster that I had never seen until I was searching for posters for this post. The immature side of me would like to point out that this poster says both "tit" and "anus" on the upper left corner.

The Bloodeaters (Toxic Zombies) - 1980. Directed by Charles McCrann. I'm not exactly sure how one would eat blood. Drinking it, of course, but eating it? You'd have to make some ice cube blood popsicles, or use it like strawberry sauce on a sundae or something. But then blood isn't really a dessert, I guess it'd fall under the condiment category.

Taste The Blood of Dracula - 1970. Directed by Peter Sasdy. If anyone is interested, I'm considering cleaning this one up and bumper stickerizing it.

Last American Virgin

I had a request for the soundtrack from The Last American Virgin, so here you go. The original LP only had 10 tracks, the version I found online has 20 tracks, so thanks to the original uploader for including a more complete version of the soundtrack.

Last American Virgin was director Boaz Davidson's remake of his own Eskimo Limon (aka Lemon Popsicle), a popular Israeli film which spawned 7 (!) sequels.

Last American Virgin is a bit of an oddity, it's a wacky comedy for the entire duration - complete with a fat kid boinking a middle aged hispanic prostitute while a comical song plays on the soundtrack - then in the last few minutes they hit our main character with a devastating emotional groin punch. And then... it just ends, no glimmer of hope for this guy or anything. Sure, it's a more realistic ending - sometimes in life, you're just gonna get screwed and there will be nothing you can do but stand there and take it. I admire the balls it took to end it like that. But, really, who watches a goofy comedy with fat kids nailing middle aged hispanic prostitutes and thinks "man, I hope I'm really bummed out and sad during the last couple of minutes of this thing."?

You want the main guy to start off cool and likable, turn into a jerk going for the hot, but incompatible friend of his equally hot, but more down to earth friend. Then you have him realize he's a jerk, redeem himself, end up with his equally hot, but more down to earth friend. Sorry, I've got Secret Admirer on my mind for some reason. Still, that's the basic formula, it's worked a thousand times without bumming everybody out.

That said, bummer ending or not, American Virgin is a pretty solid movie that I recommend checking out at least once.

Roller Boogie - Roller Skate or Die

For my contribution to Blair Week, I've chosen to upload the soundtrack to the Roller Boogeying classic Roller Boogie from director Mark Lester (Class of 1984, Firestarter, Commando). I had never seen Roller Boogie before, but for the sake of Blair Week I sat down and checked it out so I'd have a little something to talk about here.

In Roller Boogie, Linda is Terry Barkley, a floutist turned competitive roller disco fanatic who, along with her retardedly hot friend Lana (Kimberly Beck aka Trish Jarvis from Friday the 13th IV) get sucked in the wacky, and kind of stupid world of dancing on roller skates.

Despite being a musical prodigy on her way to Juliard with supremely wealthy parents, all the semi-bi-polar Terry wants to do is skate at the boardwalk. During one of here boardwalk skates Terry catches the eye of Bobby, local Olympic roller skating hopeful (???). After a good deal of effort on Bobby's part the 2 develop a relationship while Bobby trains Terry to skate as his partner in an upcoming roller boogie competition.

Everything is fine for the new couple for about a 20-minute stretch of the movie. Of course, we need some kind of plot to make this an actual movie and that's where rink owner Jammer comes in. Seems Jammer (who would let their kids go to a place owned by a guy called Jammer?) owns the last establishment a group of mobsters need to purchase and demolish before they can build their mall. He refuses to sell, but Jammer, despite being a former roller derby champion, turns into a real pussy when a gun is pointed at his face, so he decides to sell. It's up to the kids to figure out a way to save Jammer's or else they'll have to skate at one of the 20 other roller skating places at Venice Beach in 1979.

Featuring a colorful cast of characters with names like Phones (head, not rotary or pay), J.D. The DJ, and Complete Control Conway Roller Boogie is every bit as corny as it's title would make it seem. However, if you can get through the absurd amount of roller skate themed padding, there's actually a fairly fun late 70's teen comedy here.

Of course, you'd expect a roller skate movie from the 70's to have a pretty bitchin' soundtrack, and this one delivers the bitchin-ness. I snatched this one from Cinemaggeddon, credit and high-fives go out to the original ripper and uploader.

Frank Frazetta, whose work frequently graced the cover of Creepy and Eerie (among many other comics), has died at the age of 82. I've been a big Frazetta fan since my uncle gave me a ton of Warren comics when I was about 7 years old, so this is absolutely terrible news.

Machete - Trailer 2010

After 3 years or so, it looks like the rumored Machete film might actually be close to being released. Granted, this is mostly the same as the trailer from the beginning of Grindhouse, but there's plenty of new footage added featuring a fairly star studded cast. Seriously, they've managed to get Steven Seagal, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriquez and Robert Goddamn DeNiro. Pretty impressive for something that was initially done as a joke.

Brian Posehn - Fart & Wiener Jokes Streaming

Brian Posehn, one of my favorite comedians, has released his second CD entitled Fart & Wiener Jokes. Being the metal dude that he is he is streaming his entire album for free right here.

The album was put out by Relapse Records (their first comedy release?), and is available in an absurd variety of exclusive package deals. I chose this one. Sure it says "fart" and "wiener" on the shirt, something someone with my level of sophistication normally wouldn't wear, but any shirt with an impaled Carrot Top and Peanut on it is okay in my book.

Here's my latest compilation featuring 19 songs that appeared in various genre films. Some obscure, some not so obscure. I call it Mummy Came In My Room. Thanks to Eugene for inspiring the title.

I've made two covers for this one. The first, using a lovely piece of artwork from the film Wrestling Women vs. The Aztec Mummy. The second, a racy "Adults Only" version with topless hooters and a boogieing down mummy.

Some notes on most of the tracks:

Mike Armstrong - Opening Theme from House of the Devil. For some reason this excellent Cars-inspired track (performed by Ti West's friend Mike Armstrong) is not on the soundtrack release. I've ripped it from the DVD, so this should be one of the few places to find it online.

I'm a Monster & Lectro Shock from Rock 'n' Roll Frankenstein. I can't remember the name of the band so I'll just call them Frank & The Steins until someone corrects me.

Carol Browning - Edge of Forever from The Forest. Plays over the end credits of Donald "The Love Butcher" Jones' 1982 cannibal slasher film The Forest.

Cocco - Lay Down My Arms from Kairo. This is an alarmingly upbeat song to end such a downbeat movie with.

Keith Mansfield - Summer's Coming from David Cronenberg's Rabid. Credit to this track goes out to Franco from the HorrorDVDs forum. He found it and posted in online, it's an excellent track that I really wanted to include on this compilation.

Gloria Lee - Falling Into You from American Zombie. Falling Into You doesn't really have anything to do with the movie, I'm thinking Gloria Lee is related to director Grace Lee.

I'm A zombie Too also from American Zombie.It turns out zombies are just a bunch of damn hippies. There are two versions of I'm A Zombie Too in the film. First is an acoustic hippy version during Live Dead and there is also a hot-rockin' version at the beginning of the end credits. Out of boredom, I just roughly edited the two versions together.

Lisa Rypdal - En Spennende Dag For Josefine from Norwegian slasher Rovdyr (Manhunt). Known as Naked: Booby Trap in Japan.

The World Sinks Except Japan - The credits are entirely in Japanese for this one so I'm not sure the artist/title. Any help on this will be appreciated.

Suzanne Solari - Saviour from Roller Blade Warriors. I ripped this from Roller Blade Warriors, but it looks like it's also in another movie called Roller Blade. Somehow they decided this is the official anthem for any Roller Blade themed post-apocalyptic films. Warning on this one, ripped from an .avi file. Not the ideal source for ripping, obviously, but I'm pretty sure Suzanne never put out an album.

Hillbilly Hellcats - Dead Man's Party from Dead & Breakfast. While is shares a title with Oingo Boingo track this is not a cover of that song. Note: this track is tagged as being from Dead & Buried. Ignore that, I wasn't paying attention when I typed that.

Kou Nakagawa - High School Murder Case - Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl. I don't know what's more offensive in this film, the Wrist-Cutters Club or the extreme Ganguro girls with giant lips and bones in their hair.

Harry Manfredini & John Carridi - Theme from Slaughter High. I love Harry, I do, but this song really kind of gives me a headache. I'm sure some of you will enjoy it though.

Mad Disco

If you're still longing for more terrible novelty disco after the one two punch of Sesame Street Fever and Sesame Disco, it doesn't get much more terrible, or more disco than Mad Disco.

Sound quality isn't the best, but then I think this record was one of those flexi records that were stuck in the middle of the magazine, so thats to be expected.

Peter Steele Dead at 48

"Peter Steele, the deep-voiced singer, songwriter and bassist for Brooklyn’s goth-metal outfit Type O Negative, has passed away at the age of 48. In an e-mail to CBS News, the band’s manager Mike Renault confirmed Steele’s death, writing “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.” Steele was rumored to have been ill in the days leading up to his death, Blabbermouth reports.

News of Steele’s death was initially received with disbelief as Steele pulled a hoax in 2005, posting his picture and the years “1962-2005″ on the group’s official website. Soon after, Steele all but disappeared as he battled drug problems and a prison stint. But today as members of Steele’s circle began to confirm his passing, the Type O Negative message boards opened this morning with the message, “Please play nice and expect statements from the band and family later today. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Type O Negative became one of the most unlikely bands to break into the mainstream in the 1990s with their third album Bloody Kisses, which became the first album released by Roadrunner Records to go platinum. The album boasted rock radio hits “Christian Woman,” a cover of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” and the Beavis & Butthead-approved “Black No. 1.” (”These guys are like a cross between Danzig and Megadeth,” Beavis said at the time.) The 6′ 7″ singer recorded seven albums with Type O Negative, the most recent being 2007’s Dead Again, which entered the Billboard 200 at Number 27, the band’s best debut."

As a huge fan of TON's Bloody Kisses and October Rust albums (and their Black Sabbath cover, that scared the hell out of me when I was 13) this is pretty devastating news. I never got too into their later albums but Pete seemed like a great guy with a tremendous voice and a wonderfully dark and bizarre sense of humor. Obviously, he will be missed.
